Office of Research
From combatting climate change to advancing pandemic solutions, research supported by donors is critical for addressing the world’s most urgent challenges.
A fitting illustration of such research is the UC Noyce Initiative, a new consortium publicly launched in 2023 by the Robert N. Noyce Trust that brings together experts from five UC campuses for research in digital innovation. The initiative is building community and providing financial funding for cross-campus research projects in cybersecurity, quantum computing, and computational health.
Further, a more sustainable future for our lakes and oceans is in reach due to philanthropic funding for the Tahoe Environmental Research Center and Bodega Marine Laboratory. These interdisciplinary centers, located in key areas for conservation and research, help protect vital ecosystems and wildlife, engage with the public, and educate tomorrow’s leaders.
At the Institute of the Environment, experts study across disciplines to come up with solutions for carbon sequestration, wildfire resilience, and natural resource protection. Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering Jay Lund gave $800,000 to the institute’s Center for Watershed Sciences to endow graduate student fellowships in water management.
For cleaner air, the Institute for Transportation Studies and Energy and Efficiency Institute are ushering us into a world powered by renewable energy and technology. And research centers such as the Gene Therapy Center and Center for Healthcare Policy and Research are advancing health for all.
Thanks to the support of donors to the Office of Research, UC Davis not only leads the way as a top-tier research powerhouse, it is opening up new and exciting fields and is poised to make an impact on whatever new global challenges emerge next.
